From 20 minutes into the programme - a radio 4 piece on Lyme yesterday.
Interviewer gave good intro and knew his stuff..."Management of this chronic form is what causes most criticism..".
Then the great white hope of the only possible Lyme clinic in the UK, Dr Consultant Matt Dryden is interviewed. He tries to imply that everyone with aches and pains thinks they have Lyme disease these days. What a cretinaceous thing to say; what a sly thought he expressed there. I now definitely don't feel we can assume he is going to do anything different. He's made me invent a new word, cretinaceous
His voice is very like David Cameron's. He says they always give the patients the benefit of the doubt, and ALL patients have responded to a short course of antibiotics.
He says it's very clear that long-term antibiotics don't make patients better (by long term what does he mean?)
Interviewer - "all this suggests chronic patients have got something else?"
Dryden, "Yes"...."post lyme syndrome, other diseases, neurological deficits....the German clinic's long term treatment is totally unnecessary"
Dr Pearson from LDA...." its not so clear as that......effectiveness of treatment is unknown especially for late diagnosis or residual symptoms after treatment.....the big problem is the culture within the NHS of adopting false certainty that people with severe neuro problems, tick bites and all the signs, but who have negative tests, cannot have Lyme Disease"
