Richard Horowitz - "Why Can't We Get Better?"

In this video, Dr Richard Horowitz talks about the multitude of vector-borne diseases that are rapidly increasing, perhaps due to global warming (eg, he says fleas on the New York underground now carry plague and bartonella), Plus he says it's hardly ever simple Lyme but rather Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome. This is a classic video to save for when you have plenty of time - it's 1 hour 17 minutes long..

Kingwood family raises awareness for Lyme disease

It first started as joint pain around her ankles and legs that Audrey Shanahan’s parents thought might be related to growing pains.

Kingwood family raises awareness for Lyme disease
"We went to my doctor and he tested (Audrey) for a disease called PANDAS and a test for Lyme disease and it came back negative for PANDAS but positive for Lyme,” Leesa Shanahan, Audrey’s mother, said. “It can be hard to find a doctor that treats Lyme disease; you have to find a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor (LLMD.) We found a local LLMD and we got on waiting list for a couple of other experts when we first started hearing about the Hansa Center.”

Many have unfortunately had his experience where this Lyme Lyme "cuts like a dull knife" and "leaves a shell of me" as one feels "the bite of inhumanity". Babesiosis can be transmitted by a tick bite, blood transfusion, or perinatally, from mother to child

Babesiosis can be transmitted by a tick bite, blood transfusion, or perinatally, from mother to child. Classical treatment may consist of drug regimens like Mepron and Zithromax, or Clindamycin and Quinine. Treatment does not usually require a blood transfusion among those who are immunocompetent with an intact spleen, despite the fact that classical regimens may not fully eradicate the parasite. In this clinical study published in Case Reports in Infectious Diseases, the patient was found to have B. microti on a blood smear, and was reported to have been successfully treated with an exchange transfusion and IV Cleocin and Quinine after failing Mepron and Zithromax. No long term follow-up however was reported, and the majority of my patients with chronic Lyme disease and Babesiosis have evidence of persistent infection and relapsing disease (Krause, P.J. et al. Persistent Parasitemia After Acute Babesiosis. NEJM 1998; Horowitz, R. Chronic Persistent Babesiosis after Clindamycin and Quinine/ Mepron +Zithromax. Abstract 12th Int Conference on Lyme Borreliosis, April 1999 NYC). There is known Mepron resistance in the United States although it has only been reported in the literature in immuncompromised patients (Krause, PJ et al. Emergence of Resistance to Azithromycin-Atovaquone in Immunocomprised patients with Babesia microti infections. Clin Inf Dis. 2010 Jan 4) and severe hemolytic anemia as a presenting complaint in immunocompetent patients with intact spleens has been reported (Iacopino, et al. Life threatening babesiosis in a woman from Wisconsin; Arch Intern Med 1990 Jul;150(7):1527-8). No evidence of other immune testing (for example, immunoglobulin levels and subclasses) or associated tick-borne infections (i.e., Lyme, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, rickettsial infections) was discussed in this case report (despite low platelet counts and elevated liver functions, which can be seen with these co-infections), and multiple co-infections have been known to cause increased severity of illness.

Babesiosis is the most common tick-borne co-infection seen in my chronic Lyme patients

From Dr Richard Horowitz :

Babesiosis is the most common tick-borne co-infection seen in my chronic Lyme patients. This recent review article discusses the discrepancies in the medical literature regarding symptom severity and chronicity of infections when both organisms are present due to experimental design disparities and subject variability. Dr Peter Krause has published in JAMA on increased severity of symptoms in co-infected patients (P. J.Krause, et al., “Concurrent Lyme disease and babesiosis: evidence for increased severity and duration of illness,” Journal of the American Medical Association, vol. 275, no. 21, pp. 1657–1660, 1996) and my personal experience reflects his observations published in JAMA. My patients with a higher infectious burden (IB), i.e, those with Lyme, Babesia and other associated co-infections such as Bartonella and Mycoplasma species, are definitely sicker than those with low infectious burdens, and once Babesia is effectively treated, the majority of patients improve, as long as overlapping factors on the 16 point MSIDS map (especially those increasing inflammation) have been properly addressed.
Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, and Babesia microti, a causative agent of babesiosis, are increasingly implicated in the growing tick-borne disease burden in the northeastern United States. These pathogens are transmitted via ...
