The number of people diagnosed with infections caused by tick-borne bacteria and viruses has significantly increased in the Øresund / Kattegat / Skagerrak region

Over 40 000 people in the Øresund / Kattegat / Skagerrak region may last year have suffered infections after being infected by ticks. Now invested SEK 17 million in a joint Nordic project to coordinate efforts against the strongly increasing tick-borne diseases.

The project presented in Gothenburg on November 22.

The number of people diagnosed with infections caused by tick-borne bacteria and viruses has significantly increased in the Øresund / Kattegat / Skagerrak region. In 2011 ill estimated over 40 000 people - but the numbers are difficult to compare across countries, and there are many unreported.

But one thing researchers know for sure: the number of ticks in the region is a record number, probably as a consequence of climate change.

The increased incidence of Lyme disease and TBE infection has led to a deterioration of public health in the region. While doing an inadequate diagnostics that many never get treatment or vaccine. It leads to high costs for society in terms of doctor visits, medical expenses and permanent illness, says Tomas Bergström, researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy and project manager.
