"But now Coconino County's health department is planning to embark on a broader surveillance project to
round up blood-sucking bugs in the Grand Canyon and determine whether they might pose a danger to
backpackers, hikers and boaters.
"We're trying to find ways to track diseases before they become a problem," said Marlene Gaither, manager
of environmental health programs at the county's health department."
