Author Amy Tan shares her personal experience about Lyme disease. She got the disease in one of the highest Lyme endemic areas of the US, Dutchess County, N.Y., where my office is located. Her story is typical of the experience of many of my patients. Her Lyme disease was missed by multiple specialists, the ELISA was negative and yet her Western Blot and PCR were positive. She went for a long period of time without treatment. She is better, but still suffers the consequences of the illness, and relapses each time she is taken off antibiotics. Her story highlights the need for better testing and treatment regimens, as well as the urgent need to educate the public and health care providers about this worldwide epidemic.
