Like China, the Russians are figuring it out. (Where are you, USA?) In a new paper linked below, Russian scientists describe using geographically-specific Lyme borrelia species and strains to increase the sensitivity of the western blot in central Russia. This will help people suffering with Lyme disease so that they will receive an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.
With at least seven B. burgdorferi species found in America and hundreds of strains, it's high time western blots are modified for use in various regions of the USA, too.
