1948 paper on the spirochetes and how the tiny granules (cysts and blebs) can grow into fresh spirochetes. This was with syphilis spirochetes, but borrelia are totally the same in their life cycle too.

<<The electron micrographs demonstrate that this explanation is wrong, and that free granules are definitely a phase in the development of spirochetes. Although it is not possible to determine from these micrographs that the granules are germinative units their constant rhythmic occurrence in living cultures suggests this possibility. Further support of this hypothesis is provided by the fact that cultures up to 31 months old, showing only refractile granules by dark-field examination have invariably given normal growths on transfer to fresh medium (Hampp, 1946) >>

It is considered the new "GREAT IMITATOR", with its diagnosis being a major challenge

It is the most common vector-borne disease in the USA and Europe, and it is transmitted to humans through the bite of ticks of the genus Ixodes. Its animal reservoirs are the white-tailed deer, the white-footed mouse, and other small mammals. It is considered the new "GREAT IMITATOR", with its diagnosis being a major challenge. What has changed in 28 years? Nothing much. Lyme is still the crime of the century and a public health fiasco.

'reinfection' was chosen in preference to 'relapse' because different genotypes were found by PCR in the later episodes. But we know that borrelia changes it surface markers over time!
And this is the response from Sam T. Donta, M.D. ...

.This study shows that two patients contracted the tick-borne infection Ehrlichia chaffeensis via kidney transplants. The organs came from the same deceased donor. Lack of screening for tick-borne diseases is a real concern.
