Gillibrand Promotes Lyme Disease Research

"Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand visited Weill Cornell Medical College Monday to promote research into lyme disease.

Gillibrand said that the disease is one of the fastest-growing public health threats.

"From parks in all of the five boroughs of New York City, to the beaches of Long Island, to the farms of upstate New York, tick-borne diseases are growing and [are] a growing public health crisis," she said.

Lyme disease is caused by tick bites, but it's often misdiagnosed.

Researchers say even many doctors don't know about its long-term effects.

If left untreated, lyme disease can affect the joints, heart and nervous system."
