a surprising short history lesson on Lyme Disease

From a blog in WI, a surprising short history lesson on Lyme Disease:

"Even though it seems that this a fairly “new” disease, ticks were present in abundance in New England in the 1600s. In 1749 ticks were still around, but 100 years later, after most of the trees were cut down, the ticks largely disappeared, except for a few places along the eastern coast and in Wisconsin and Minnesota."

"Many people suffered from mysterious illnesses and some had the ring like rash that became known as erythema migrans in 1909. The connection between tick bites and the disease was not made until the 1920s. Europe began using penicillin to treat the disease in the 1950s."
