From Dr. Richard Horowitz wonderful news
I just got back from giving Grand Rounds at Harvard, and doing a community talk at the Spalding Rehab Center, associated with Mass General. The people were great and I want to personally thank Dr Alan Steere for allowing me to give a CME credit course at his institution. It was titled: Lyme Disease and Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome (MSIDS): A New Paradigm for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Illness. I discussed issues with chronic disease in the United States, the differences between the two guidelines on Lyme disease, problems with testing and seronegative infection, evidence of persistence of infection, and how co-infections and multiple overlapping etiologies on the MSIDS map increases inflammation and contributes to chronic illness. I also explained how the MSIDS model can be used to help decrease associated health care costs by diagnosing and treating the underlying sources of inflammation in chronic disease. This model may help us to deal more effectively with the spread of chronic illness in the United States, which is responsible for 75% of our health care costs.
I am very pleased that a bridge between two camps is being built, and I asked the Harvard researchers at Grand Rounds to please work with me to find answers for my sick and suffering patients. Although the majority of patients who come to see me get better, there are still those with resistant ongoing and disabling symptoms, with ongoing inflammation. I asked for their assistance in finding an answer. This is an exciting time.
The next step towards working together is a forum where we all meet to discuss Lyme and associated tick-borne disorders. That will be happening in several weeks time. Congressman Chris Gibson asked me to chair the upcoming Dutchess County Medical Society Lyme conference, and I asked that Dr Gary Wormser please be invited. He has accepted the invitation. We will be having an educational forum on Lyme disease on May 16th, 9am to 3pm at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel (directions: http://pokgrand.com/directions/), Poughkeepsie, NY. It is open to both health care professionals and the public. I hope to see you there!
