On Wed., July 17 an important public talk will be presented on the tick-borne infection caused by Bartonella. This microorganism is less well known than Lyme disease and is transmitted by the same tick that transmits Lyme disease, i.e., the deer tick. Both microorganisms can be obtained from the same tick bite. Bartonella is a growing serious infection in our region and physicians are not sufficiently aware of it nor routinely look for it during examination. Bartonella can cause serious neurologic illness and has been linked to several brain disorders, e.g., Parkinson's disease. It also is a frequent cause of gastroenterological illness in children.

The presenter is Professor Edward Breitschwerdt, DVM, Professor of Internal of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center. Dr Breitschwerdt is the world's leading expert in Bartonella research. He will discuss Bartonella infection, diagnosis, and treatment in human patients. He has spoken nationally and internationally on Bartonella and published numerous research articles in major medical journals. He was a key figure in the diagnosis and treatment of the University of Delaware's star woman's basketball player, Elena Delle Donne.
