European project seeking antidote to diseases spread by the tick
"Ticks, through their bites, transmit various types of bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause diseases such as Central European encephalitis (TBE), typhus, bovine fever, human babesiosis, Lyme disease and meningoencephalitis. For some of these illnesses there is no available vaccine in existence, the only measure currently that can be adopted in order to combat the bite of these parasites being prevention and vigilance.
To respond to this problem a European initiative has been recently put into action, participating in which is the Basque biosciences research centre, CIC bioGUNE, whose goal is to identify the components in the saliva of the tick which could be employed as active ingredients for the subsequent development of a vaccine against the multiple diseases transmitted through the bite."
