Sugar is so bad for us with Lyme and even if you don't have Lyme!
For every molecule of sugar you consume, it takes over 50 molecules of magnesium to process it. Now think of our kids. Their body mass is much smaller than ours, yet they are eating full servings of cookies, cupcakes, fruit snacks, candy, juice, etc. that are depleting their bodies of important minerals including the very necessary magnesium. Magnesium deficiency in kids is now being linked to ADD/ADHD along with insomnia and anxiety.
Sugar has been shown to compromise the immune system for several hours after consumption. It’s no wonder cold and flu season coincides with the holiday season. Furthermore, if you are eating processed foods, then you are consuming refined sugar in everything including bread, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, ketchup, etc. Don’t just think that because you didn’t eat dessert today you are not consuming refined sugars.
Sugar feeds the bad bacteria. The bad bacteria in our guts love to feed off of sugar among other things. When the bad bacteria takes over the good bacteria all kinds of health problems can result.
In case you have eaten sugar, but I hope you haven't, these tips can help to combat the negative side effects...
1.) Protein. Whenever I know we are going to consume sugar, I try to bring along some extra snacks like nuts and/or cheese cubes that can help stabilize their blood sugar. If anything, this helps prevent some of the ‘jumping off the walls’ that often occurs when our kids have too much sugar in their system. Keeping stable blood sugar levels is also important for preventing tooth decay. Ramiel Nagel noted in his book Cure Tooth Decay that when blood sugars spike or drop, our bodies have to pull minerals to compensate, oftentimes weakening our teeth.
2.) Magnesium oil. Rubbing Magnesium Oil or Magnesium Lotion into your skin after eating sugar can help to replace the magnesium that is being used up to process the sugar. Epsom salt baths can also help, although your body absorbs more magnesium with the oil.
3) Probiotics. Loading up on the probiotics after eating sugar will help feed the good bacteria and support your immune system. We enjoy drinking water and milk kefir (You can buy these through my affiliate Cultures for Health), but you can also take a high-quality probiotic supplement such as Klaire Labs and/or eat fermented foods.
