Mother from Berkshire warns of the dangers of tick bites

When Luke was only ten, he started to exhibit frightening #altzheimers type symptoms - he became unable to read, would be unable to find the words to finish a sentence, would pick up a pen and not remember how to write, and could watch the same film three days in a row without remembering either the plot, or having seen it previously.
We didn't know at the time that these symptoms, along with the crippling pain and fatigue, were the result of undiagnosed neurological #LymeDisease, from a tick bite he'd sustained eighteen months earlier in our local park.
We've had to fund all his treatment ourselves, as there is little guidance within the NHS for late-diagnosed Lyme, and there are currently no tick-borne disease specialists in the U.K.
He continues to make progress under the care of a specialist in the U.S, and he amazes me every day with his resilience.
Not all ticks carry disease, but please follow PHE advice and check yourselves if you've been outside; nymph ticks can be the size of a poppy seed..
