The New Tick Danger

Nice article in Men's Journal (except it inaccurately states that infectious disease specialist Dr. Krause was first to discover Borrelia miyamotoi in the United States last summer. The organism was discovered in North America years before that, but not by Krause.)
In 2009, Borrelia miyamotoi was also identified in wild turkeys in Tennessee. Lone star ticks were removed from the birds. Here's the report: http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1603/me10075?journalCode=ment The o...

Parents of children with Chronic Lyme Disease can certainly relate to this mother's desire to "just be mommy..."
“Mommy. I just want to be mommy.” Having a child that is medically complex is exhausting. It drains me in ways I didn’t realize. I have been forced to learn things I never wanted to learn about: heart defects, stomach and intestinal defects, drug interactions, hospital policies…the list can go on and on.
"I have become doctor, nurse, therapist, pharmacist, advocate, medical billing manger, accountant…all for the sake of my son. And, I joyfully take on the role. Because joy is something that is deeper than happiness…it’s an almost transcendent feeling."
After an hour long visit, his doctor looks at me and confidently says, “Ok. I think we have a good plan. Let’s see how things go this month and follow up with us in August. I trust if anything happens...

Lincoln teen gets Lyme disease from tick bite in city park

e Disease can be contracted anywhere in the UK although not all ticks will be infected with Borrelia (Lyme Disease) it is difficult to know if they are. Ticks are a cesspit of infection and can pass along other infections which can cause health problems to humans sometimes even more than one species or strain of Borrelia which can work together causing a more difficult illness to treat.

Suppression of Amblyomma americanum (Ixodida: Ixodidae) for Short-Term Field Operations...

Military personnel are often plagued by ticks during field training exercises. Pyrethroids are organic compounds with chemical structures much like natural pyrethrins, produced by the flowers of pyrethrums (Chrysanthemums). Navy and Marine researchers conducted a study to determine whether applying certain pyrethrins to an area prior to military operations would reduce tick numbers enough to make a difference.
"Our results indicate that both Cypermethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin were effective in significantly reducing tick numbers and preventing entry into treated plots for 6 wk after application. Thus, these two acaracides can be used to effectively suppress tick populations and provide residual protection in small geographic areas of recreation or public health significance."
