Military personnel are often plagued by ticks during field training exercises. Pyrethroids are organic compounds with chemical structures much like natural pyrethrins, produced by the flowers of pyrethrums (Chrysanthemums). Navy and Marine researchers conducted a study to determine whether applying certain pyrethrins to an area prior to military operations would reduce tick numbers enough to make a difference.
"Our results indicate that both Cypermethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin were effective in significantly reducing tick numbers and preventing entry into treated plots for 6 wk after application. Thus, these two acaracides can be used to effectively suppress tick populations and provide residual protection in small geographic areas of recreation or public health significance."
