Mississippi researchers report they've detected various Borrelia spirochetes in Gulf Coast ticks from Mississippi including Borrelia turcica, a species associated with reptiles.
We found Gulf Coast ticks as far inland as Atlanta during tick collecting projects, so don't be fooled by the name. Gulf coast ticks are known to bite humans and have been associated with Rickettsia parkeri cases. More research is needed to determine whether these ticks transmit Borreliosis, as well.
Remember, nobody knows everything about ticks and the diseases they carry. There's not a tick bite that's a good tick bite. Protect yourself.
