B. miyamotoi lives in the tick’s mouth and can invade the body almost immediately.

It wasn't Lyme disease. It was Borrelia miyamotoi, another tick-borne disease.

1 in 4 patients who were tested at Columbia's Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center had antibodies to B. miyamotoi, suggesting they had been infected with it previously, reports Dr. Brian Fallon.

Yet, few patients are diagnosed with it and treated.

B. burgdorferi (Lyme disease bacteria) lives in the tick’s gut. But B. miyamotoi lives in the tick’s mouth and can invade the body almost immediately.
Her lethargy and joint pain suggested a tick-borne illness. Adding to the mystery, was a recent trip abroad a clue or a red herring?
