Australian ticks can carry and transmit multiple pathogens in a single bite.
Wherever ticks exist in the world, they can carry bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other disease-causing organisms. Australia is no exception.
Yet here in Australia, there is still no federal monitoring or surveillance of tick bites, or of illnesses that develop after a tick bite.
Research into Australian ticks and the diseases they may transmit remains seriously underfunded and under-prioritised.
So we’re doing something about it.
We’ve launched Tick Science Alliance, and the first step in gathering the data government isn’t collecting is the Tick Observatory.
This citizen science project, led by parasitologist Mackenzie Kwak - Parasitologist aims to help build the evidence base Australia urgently needs.
