There are salient facts of microbiology that continue to be ignored by even reputable publications, like this one, in regard to chronic bacterial infections:
- Most microbes create biofilms, the normative state for microbes, and have been for three billion years. These biofilms within nature, animals and humans are sequestered and are protected from the immune system and antibiotics.
- Biofilm communities are like schools; they trade information in many ways, especially with plasmids. In fact, I learned from my interviews with researchers that biofilms accelerate the gene transfer process… and therefore mutations that lead to even more severe disease states.
- The FDA scientists and trial methods are designed around “”old world” ideas based on Koch’s postulates. There are new antibiotics that can actually penetrate biofilms (unlike 99.9% of all products in development) and target non-mammalian, polykingdom microbes. The FDA “approval infrastructure” truly needs to be made more adaptive to evaluate these life-saving medicines.
As long as the CDC, NIH, AHRQ and FDA are using the 160 year-old model of zapping little squigglies – planktonic bacteria – instead of biofilm communities, millions of people will suffer with UTIs, HAIs, Lyme, COPD, foot wounds, periodontitis, etc. There are people in these bureaucracies that know biofilm science better than I will ever know, but they are not given a voice. These professionals need the microphone and should be setting the policies to rescue this very sick nation of patients. And even their research budgets are shamefully low!
We are no longer a nation of productive citizens; we have become a nation of dependent patients. Neither the Creator or our founding fathers would have wanted this fate for us. So let’s get real smart, real fast on how the ignorance of biofilm science is killing us, literally, and slowly.
